Whidbey Island is dominated by Oak Harbor which has a population of 24K by a 2023 count. However, it’s the smaller towns on the island that draw my attention such as Coupeville, Freeland (not incorporated) and Langley.
Coupeville is mostly farmland also known as the Eby’s Landing National Historic Preserve. The town of Coupeville is basically two main streets and it also is home to the local government for Island County (Whidbey and Camano islands).
The structure of the city has remained the same offering a main street feeling with small independent businesses, mostly restaurants, bars and bed and breakfasts. The city host a farmer’s market that is worth visiting as well. And the views of the water are worth checking out or it’s a good place for people who enjoy boating.
And if it’s your lucky day, you might meet a bald eagle or two on the beach.
I’ve seen deer walking across the crosswalk, stopping traffic.
Just bring your tick repellant.
You might a tuxedo cat. And speaking of non-humans, I once heard a crow sounding off catcalls. And I thought that was coming from cheeky high school boys. Nope, it was a crow. Another time I caught a crow barking like a poodle. Only in Coupeville.
I don’t get around as much as I once did so I haven’t had time to explore the small Whidbey towns. Perhaps, after I recover from Lyme, I can set out on new adventures.
I’m so cute you can’t stand it.
